    Rain Monday forced schedule changes for the 2025 Calhoun County softball tournament and those changes demonstrated the importance of being one of the top seeds and winning. Alexandria, the No. 1 seed, No. 2 Pleasant Valley and No. 3 White Plains each won in the second round of games after receiving a first-round bye and played just once Tuesday. No. 6 Jacksonville, No. 7 Weaver and No. 8 Wellborn each played three games after winning in the opening round and losing in the second.

    JACKSONVILLE - Acting on the recommendation of Superintendent Dr. Michael Barber, the five members of the Jacksonville City Board of Education voted unanimously Thursday evening to approve the hiring of Jeremy Sullivan as Jacksonville High School's new head football coach. Sullivan, a 1998 graduate of Leroy High School, played for coach Jack Crowe at Jacksonville State University as an offensive lineman. While at Jax State, he started 43 straight games between 1998 and 2001.

    Playing in the Piedmont softball tournament Friday, Oxford defeated Sand Rock 7-2. Jayla Jackson went the distance in the five-inning game. She did not allow an earned run while striking out six. Jackson, Emma Tims-Becerra and Madison Murphy each recorded two hits and two RBIs. Murphy doubled twice and added a sacrifice fly. Tims-Becerra homered and Jackson had one double.     Visiting Oxford exploded for 11 runs in the top of the sixth inning and defeated Piedmont 18-1 in softball Monday. Batting ninth, Tymeria Smith-Lindsey tripled twice, singled twice and drove in five runs. Jayla Jackson's three hits included a triple and a double. She finished with five RBIs. Leadoff batter Emma Tims-Becerra was 4-for-6 with two doubles and four RBIs.Madison Murphy went 3-for-4 with a double. Haleigh Pruitt was 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Jordyn Alexander doubled and drove two runs home.
