Ultrasound imaging has long been a staple in biomedicine, but recent advances in super-resolution ultrasound and genetically encoded echogenic probes have renewed interest in using this modality for basic research in animals and other models where tissue opacity is prohibitive to exploration by optical microscopy. David Maresca of the Delft University of Technology and colleagues were inspired by innovations in light-sheet and multi-photon microscopy to improve volumetric ultrasound imaging.
