Jeff Broberg, 71, a clean water and trout fishing advocate and a giant on Minnesota’s conservation scene, died Saturday, April 12 from complications of pancreatic cancer. In a Facebook post on March 29, Broberg shared his cancer diagnosis and thanked friends and family for their prayers. He said he was waiting for more details from the Mayo Clinic and asked for time to process the news. The disease progressed quickly, however, and two weeks after the social media post, he passed.

Back in 1997, Outdoor News columnist Shawn Perich wrote a piece about efforts by the Grand Portage Band to restore brook trout to Lake Superior tributaries. The piece included a photo of Rick Novitsky, the band’s then-natural resources director, holding a plastic bag containing “Brooks,” one of 26 young brook trout the band recently had discovered in a North Shore tributary stream.

The Minnesota Chapter of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers has chosen outdoors educator Chance Adams of Tenstrike (north of Bemidji) as its new board chair. Mansfield told Outdoor News that he’ll now serve the state BHA chapter as vice co-chair of policy.

Two weeks ago, Minnesota DNR Fisheries restricted the bag limit for yellow perch on Lake Mille Lacs. The fantastic jumbo bite there this winter produced big grins and piles of fillets for anglers, plus positive news for the Mille Lacs region. Coupled with the upcoming two-walleye bag beginning May 10, the year has kicked off well for the big lake. The perch limit slashing from 20 to five presents a case study that could’ve happened anywhere.

Being a public watchdog sometimes means sitting through boring legislative hearings and wading through long reports, then summarizing them for readers. Like this past Sunday evening, when I spent time perusing the thrilling, 102-page February 2025 Budget and Economic Forecast from the Minnesota Management and Budget office. The report arrived last week, and tucked into the bottom of Page 47 was a cold sentence that only a CPA could love.
