Attica Locke’s thrillers have always been as much about socio-political commentary as they have a core mystery. Her 2009 debut, Black Water Rising, was a well-received whodunnit in which racial inequality played as substantive a role as the oil money that drove the plot. When Stuart Turton won the Costa First Novel prize for his astonishing debut The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle (2018), it was a more-than-worthy winner.
