The second-year Hanahan skipper wanted to still be playing for a Class 3A championship during the final week of the season - especially for seniors Riley Ballard, Joe Furse and Garrett Brown – but thoughts of what can be in 2026 entered his mind. “It was an awesome season,” Hunter said.

To hear Landy Cox tell it, the Berkeley Stags baseball team made four errors before it recorded an out this season. The longtime Berkeley baseball coach is definitely a fighter, but some doubt was beginning to creep in with the inexperienced squad he was running out there every night. “I almost shut down,” Cox said. “I said it was going to be a long year.”He was right. Yes, it’s going to be a long year, but not exactly in the way he thought about it way back in February.
Stags, Knights dominate diamond superlatives

Berkeley County School District players and coaches snagged five of the six Region 7-5A superlatives on the diamond this spring. Berkeley’s Kelley Dillon was named softball coach of the year and Stratford’s Tony Osterman claimed coach of the year honors. Both guided their teams to region titles and postseason district crowns this season, with some of the Lowcountry’s top players leading the way. Both squads were in their respective Lower State championship series as of May 20.

St. James pitcher Raegan Hibbits hurled a no-hitter and struck out 12 batters to power visiting St. James High School past Berkeley High School, 1-0, in the first game of the Class 5A Div. II Lower State championship series Monday, May 19, in Moncks Corner. St. James scored the game’s only run in the top of the fifth inning. Berkeley pitcher Reese Watson was strong inside the circle, too. The senior fanned eight batters over seven innings and allowed three hits. The one run was unearned.
Anderson, Kowlok strike gold at state meet

Jayden Anderson and Lukas Kowlok soared in different ways during the Class 5A Div. I state track and field championship meet Saturday, May 17, at Spring Valley High School. Cane Bay’s Anderson floated over hurdles to win a pair of golds in the 110-meter and 400-meter hurdles and Stratford’s Kowlok flew highest to win the pole vault, highlighting performances by Berkeley County School District athletes in the state’s largest classification.

Berkeley High School's baseball program has been one of the best in South Carolina the past several years. Stratford High School seems to be returning to its former glory this spring, too. Both the Stags and Knights took their next steps in the Class 5A baseball playoffs Friday, May 16, at home. Berkeley knocked off visiting North Myrtle Beach, 6-2, to advance to the Div. II Lower State championship series. Stratford blanked visiting Fort Dorchester, 2-0, to move on to the Div.
