Just walk outside and you will know the forecast. It`s Summer, hot, muggy, daily rain chances, and just downright oppressive conditions. This afternoon temps will warm into the lower to mid 90s across the entire region and with dew-points in the 70s, this will easily lead to heat index values in the 100s with most sites sitting between 104 and 110. The primary concerns over the next 36 hours will be the heat, and the potential for thunderstorms.

The main story today will be the heat as high pressure continues to spread eastward along the Gulf Coast today. Low level moisture will be on the increase today as well, which coupled with the hot afternoon temperatures will lead to heat index values to climb into the 108-110 F range. That said, there could be some late afternoon relief in the form of isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms, however, subsidence should keep most of this activity low-topped and rather low in coverage.

While the low level circulation of former Tropical Storm Alberto dissipated yesterday afternoon, the mid and upper circulation is still evident with a drier air mass moving in from the NE. The flow between high pressure to the north and low pressure near the Bay of Campeche is not as strong as it has been for much of the week, meaning winds will be quite a bit lighter.

Tropical Storm Alberto has made landfall along the Mexico coastline and continues to move west and weaken. As the pressure gradient weakens, the wind field should relax somewhat. However, it will take time for the winds and swell to abate. Additionally, with no significant change in the wind direction, it will take some time for the higher water in the tidal lakes to drain.

Strong high pressure is centered over Pennsylvania extending southwestward to Mississippi and Alabama. Potential Tropical Cyclone One (PTC 1) continues over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico and the Bay of Campeche. An upper weakness extends from northwest Ontario to the Pacific Northwest. The pressure gradient between the Bermuda high and the system in the southwest Gulf continues to produce breezy to windy conditions, mainly over the coastal waters.
