It’s a good thing Russia didn’t table a low-ball bid for the next round of BC Ferries ships. Because the province might well be shaking hands with Vladamir Putin right now for four shiny new boats, based on the decision-making and values on display Tuesday by Premier David Eby. It’s hard to escape that conclusion, after listening to the premier defend his decision not to overturn a multibillion-dollar contract between government-owned BC Ferries and the government of China.

B.C.’s housing minister says he’s fed up with squabbling municipal councils, and will bring in changes to provincial oversight of dysfunctional local governments before voters go to the polls next in 2026. Ravi Kahlon said he’s willing to listen on potential solutions, but will not go as far as to dismiss mayors and councillors deadlocked in petty squabbles that overwhelm the business of local government, as is occurring in communities like Kamloops.

The B.C. New Democratic Party rebuked its own leader and government over the weekend for allowing the taxpayer-owned BC Ferries corporation to contract out construction of its ships to the Chinese government. The move occurred at an NDP provincial council meeting on Saturday, where Premier David Eby was grilled for his refusal to override BC Ferries and direct the ships be built in B.C. with new investments to grow a domestic shipbuilding industry.
