The BC Ferry Commissioner recently approved the transportation company to purchase four new ferries, not the five it requested, and now various agencies on Vancouver Island are calling on the province to intervene. The Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce wrote the letter on behalf of itself and 14 other chambers of commerce and five tourism groups. In it, Bruce Williams, CEO of the Greater Victoria chamber, asked that B.C. Premier David Eby intervene to approve the fifth ferry.

Canadians are dying alone from toxic drugs and experts say easier access to at-home drug-testing strips could help prevent deaths. But they warn the strips have limitations. Dr. Nash Denic, Newfoundland and Labrador’s chief medical examiner, says that though the strips aren’t perfect, they can be useful in detecting if some toxins are present. He would like to see a government-led pilot project to distribute the strips along with naloxone kits, which reverse the effects of opioid overdoses.

The Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) is expanding to the West Coast with a new team in Vancouver for the upcoming season. The Vancouver team will be the seventh team in the league, which was founded in August 2023. “Vancouver is a vibrant city with a deep love for the game—as we saw firsthand during the PWHL Takeover Tour earlier this season,” Amy Scheer, PWHL executive vice president of business operations, said.
