    Replacing a former single-storey dwelling which was in a poor state of repair, the two new houses are mirror images of each other. Each house is laid out over three levels. On the ground floor, the open-plan kitchen/dining/living spaces at the rear overlook private rear gardens, with a stepped façade incorporating a feature window seat and brick canopy. Four bedrooms are accommodated on the upper two floors, alongside a workspace/office on the top floor.

    The buildings, on Farringdon Road within the Clerkenwell Green Conservation Area, were originally four Victorian warehouses, housing a printworks and shops selling bicycles and printing ink. Incremental conversions over the years had left the warehouses with a confusing array of tenancies contained within an inefficient, leaky envelope.

    Hopkins Architects’ new ‘SciTech’ buildings for Haileybury private school in Hertford double the school’s previous provision and provide a new model for teaching science. Source:Hopkins ArchitectsTogether, the buildings provide science laboratories, IT suites, robotics amenities and design and technology (DT) facilities as well as a dedicated research centre, 20 teaching and seminar spaces, a geodome, VR Room, media room and outdoor courtyard.

    The development is in La Confluence, a previously industrial area of the French city where the Rhône and Saône rivers converge, and is part of a masterplan by Herzog & de Meuron. David Chipperfield Architects was appointed to coordinate three blocks consisting of 11 buildings, creating a mixed-use quarter with a focus on social and environmental sustainability.

    Peckham House has a simple four-square form, given character and texture through its distinctive hit-and-miss brickwork. Occupying an end-of-terrace site – previously a piece of scrubby grass – next to a Brutalist car park in Peckham, south London, judges liked how it successfully fitted into its eclectic context. ‘It stands out but blends in,’ said one. ‘Unique, but doesn’t seem out of place. Brilliantly contextual,’ said another.
