And dozens of residents have written to a council about it, with many objecting but some supporting it. Property firm Hattersley Centre S.A.R.L wants change-of-use permission so the former Tile Giant building at Hattersley Way can be used for a takeaway-restaurant.

Ribble Valley town centre businesses are to be offered financial help to improve shop fronts with grant support from the borough council. The money can be used to spruce-up the fronts of commercial properties such as shops, cafes and offices at ground-floor level in places such as Clitheroe, Longridge and Whalley, The shop front grant scheme was backed at the latest meeting of Ribble Valley Council's Economic Development Committee.

Last year, the Irwell and the River Darwen, near Blackburn, were described as two of the most polluted rivers in England by Lancashire Wildlife Trust. Now, Bury Trades Council, which brings together local trade unions on issues affecting people at work, industries and communities, is holding a public meeting about the Irwell and the wider water industry on Thursday, 26 June.
