    A village residents' group is requesting £1,500 from a council committee towards the display of illuminated globes at Christmas time, saying factors including rising costs and tougher financial times mean local businesses can no longer help for free. Higherford Residents' Action Group has requested £1,500 for the Higherford Globes project from Pendle Council's Barrowford & Western Parishes Area Committee. It comes as Rachel Reeves announced Westminster government funding for some northern transport schemes. The chancellor focused on selected English regions which currently have directly elected mayors, such as Liverpool City Region and Greater Manchester. West Lancashire is located between them.

    Activate Clitheroe says a footpath and cycle way built along the A671 Pimlico Old Road, where a Haweswater tunnel marshalling yard is earmarked, would help form a larger orbital route around Clitheroe of benefit to many people. The report also highlights the high rate of 'under-occupied' large houses - with two spare bedrooms or more. New estimates suggest over 320 affordable homes are needed in the borough for people who struggle to afford home ownership or rent. But with various factors including re-lets considered, the net need could be lower at 230 properties.
