Imagine a major city with no streetlights. It would be more difficult to navigate at night, its downtown would be empty after dark, businesses would avoid locating there, shops and restaurants would close early, and crime would flourish. The well-being of every resident, even those who never venture downtown, would suffer. Now, imagine a major city with no hospitals. As with streetlights, the ripple effects would diminish the well-being of every resident.

Robert I. Field argues that private equity’s impact on price competition among nursing homes is limited because prices are mostly determined by Medicaid. However, private equity does impact quality and labor outcomes, which deserve greater government scrutiny. This article is part of a series that explores how private equity reduces competition in the United States healthcare sector and the ways in which enforcers can respond. How much austerity can our hospitals take? It’s a frightening question — and Congress is threatening to find out the answer. America’s health care infrastructure is shrinking. Since 2018, more than 100 hospitals have closed across the U.S. When hospitals close, doctor visits go down, death rates go up and job losses are severe. Now, Republicans in Congress are threatening to slash the Medicaid budget, which would strip even more hospitals of desperately needed funding.

Methane has a short atmospheric lifetime compared to carbon dioxide (CO2), ∼decade versus ∼centuries, but it has a much higher global warming potential (GWP), highlighting how reducing methane emissions can slow the rate of climate change. When considering the contribution of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to current global warming (2010–2019) relative to the industrial revolution (1850–1900) levels, methane contributes 0.5 °C or ∼ a third of the total.

My op-ed on #Medicaid as a source of social and economic support for all of society appeared in today's @PhillyInquirer. Everyone, rich and poor, would feel the effects if efforts in Congress to cripple it succeeded. https://t.co/iDZDqx9Q0P @DrexelKlineLaw @drexelpubhealth
