In recent days, there has been an excited buzz amongst distance aficionados about the rumor that two-time Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen will be making his much anticipated half-marathon debut on Sunday at the Copenhagen Half Marathon, where he’d join a loaded field that already includes half marathon world record holder Jacob Kiplimo of Uganda and reigning world half marathon champion Sabastian Sawe of Kenya.

Now that I’ve had almost a full week to recover from the Olympic track action and COVID-19, I’ve been able to come up with my five biggest winners overachievers and five biggest losers underachiever from the Paris Olympics. The term winners and losers works best for the headline but the word “losers” is too harsh and unair — showing up to the Olympics and giving your best doesn’t mean you’re a loser.

The organizers of the 2024 BMW Berlin Marathon which will take place on September 29 released their elite fields today. For the first time since 2014, neither Eliud Kipchoge or Kenenisa Bekele will be in the men’s race where former half-marathon world record holder Kibiwott Kandie will hope to make a splash. The field will feature six sub-2:05 guys (double the amount from last year’s race) and 10 sub-2:06 guys.

In recent days, there has been a lot of discussion about US Olympic marathon runner Fiona O’Keeffe’s decision to try to run the Olympic marathon while injured and her subsequent DNF. O’Keeffe was shown hobbling well behind the field less than 20-seconds into the race and only made it a mile.

PARIS – It’s becoming a trend. Falls played a major role at the US Olympic Trials in the women’s 800 and in recent Diamond Leagues in Monaco and London in the men’s 1500. Now the epidemic has spread to the 5,000 meters as the two Olympic preliminaries on Wednesday morning featured a total of six men hitting the ground across three separate incidents.

Paris — After tonight’s loss in the men’s 1500 of the 2024 Paris Olympics, the reality is Jakob Ingebrigtsen has now lost all four global 1500 championships that he’s run since winning the 2021 Olympics – 2022 World Indoors, 2022 and 2023 World Outdoors and now the 2024 Olympics. Moving forward, it would be foolish to expect him to win if he tries to front run it. As great as Jakob is on the circuit in rabbited races, it’s extremely hard to front run and win a global 1500 title.

PARIS – Tonight the focus of the athletics world will be on the men’s 1500 but this morning while most track and field fans in the US were sleeping, the women’s 1500 got underway with little drama. Almost all of the medal favorites and all three Americans advanced to the semifinals with ease as one of the six auto qualifiers in each heat (Emily Mackay 5th in heat 1 in 3:59.63, Nikki Hiltz 3rd in heat 2 in 4:00.43, Elle St Pierre third in heat 3 in 4:03.22).

PARIS – The 2024 Olympic men’s steeple final is set. Olympic champ Soufiane El Bakkali and world record holder Lamecha Girma both looked great in winning their heats, but world indoor 1500 champ Geordie Beamish struggled and failed to advance to the final after taking 7th in his heat. Kenneth Rooks, who finished 2nd behind Girma in heat 3, will be the lone American in the final.

A regular LetsRun visitor and Supporters Club member who is planning on betting multiple hundreds of thousands at the Olympics recently hired myself and Jonthan Gault for a consulting project. He asked us to go through all of the track events at the 2024 Paris Olympics and come up odds. For each event, we were given a spreadsheet and told to put down each runner’s individual odds and have them add up to 100%. He wanted to see if his own internal odds were similar to our own.
