    Once upon a time, Thomas Jefferson made archaeological history when he excavated a burial mound. While it caused tension with the indigenous peoples in the area, it proved to European Americans that these massive hills were, indeed, burial sites. Today, burial-purpose earthworks in the United States are protected by the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), but this wasn't always the case.

    After four days of touring barns in 2018, including driving through 10 counties in Ohio’s Appalachian region, I finally arrived in Perry County, my final stop. Four truly round barns, all within a few miles of each other, drew me here, but finding them was a challenge — going up and down gravel roads and making wrong turns, thanks to my GPS being out of range. However, I found three of them, all of which I liked.

    I visited this barn several years ago, thanks to a referral from Tom O’Grady, an expert on old barns and fellow member of the group, Friends of Ohio Barns. Unfortunately, I’ve not had a chance to do a full tour of the barns in Athens County. I’m sure there are many more with captivating stories like this one. A sign titled “Red Bird Ranch” makes it hard to miss this large red bank barn, sitting on a rise adjacent to State Route 329.
