Stargazing is one of the most simple yet magical ways to spend an evening. We can look up at the sky and see the same constellations that people in ancient civilizations saw, like Ursa Major, Canis Major, Cassiopeia, and many more. This week was spring break and Tony McCosham had seen me having so much fun on my adventures with the kids that he decided he wanted in. He planned an elaborate but brilliant road trip to Cleveland and Niagara Falls for the end of the week. We didn’t have cable growing up, so my viewing options were limited to about 10 channels (or less, if our rabbit ears were being persnickety). As a result I watched a lot of PBS, including The French Chef and Baking with Julia. This was my first exposure to cooking—my parents weren’t keen on letting kids in the kitchen—and I loved watching Julia whip and whirl through the kitchen, narrating with such vim and vigor.

I am a little bit of a loner when it comes to adventuring. I love going on a hike in Tennessee with my family and maybe bringing along someone else, but for the most part, it's just us. Even when we go to National Parks, I will rarely go into the visitor center. Not because I am some weird trailblazing hermit who wants to shelter myself from all of civilization, but because it just sort of works for us. That is until I went on my first hike with the Parks and Rec department.

I am, admittedly, a bit of a nerd when it comes to geology - especially when it comes to geology in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. You may be asking, Why?, and that doesn't surprise me. When folks look at my home state, they're not often as astounded by its geologic features as they are by, say, the Grand Canyon or Arches National Park.

Fed up with the realities of family travel, editor Sarah McCosham had a radical idea in 2024: instead of a big vacation for her family of six, what if she took each of her kids on small, one-on-one adventures?
