HARRISBURG — The Interstate 95 overpass bridge collapse is a warning call about the consequences of other bridge failures in Pennsylvania, according to a study of PennDOT released earlier this month by a legislative research agency. “The bridge was relatively new as it was just 10 years old,” said the study by the Legislative Budget and Finance Committee (LBFC) referring to the accident involving a gas tanker truck in June.

HARRISBURG — House lawmakers in Pennsylvania voted Wednesday to extend jobless benefits to workers on strike. House Bill 1481, which passed the lower chamber 106-97, would make workers unemployed due to a labor dispute eligible for compensation, alongside others who haven’t voluntarily quit their jobs. “Making the decision to strike is not easy by any means,” said Rep. Jason Dawkins, D-Philadelphia.

HARRISBURG — A Senate committee approved legislation Tuesday to toughen the penalties for individuals making terroristic threats against schools. The Republican-controlled Judiciary Committee voted 12-2 in favor of Senate Bill 975 sponsored by Sen. Michele Brooks, R-Mercer, creating new felony offenses for falsely reporting emergency threats towards a school or educational facility.

A federal court has ruled that a Pennsylvania community's resolution prohibiting the display of an American flag with a thin blue line on all township property is unconstitutional. The ruling about the flag that's also used as part of the police union’s logo came down Monday. The dispute in Springfield Township, about 15 miles from Philadelphia, arose over the use of the black-and-white American flag, with one horizontal blue stripe.

HARRISBURG — Three bills seeking to expand and strengthen Pennsylvania's anti-hate crime statutes were passed Tuesday by the state House of Representatives. All members of the chamber's Democratic majority supported the proposals along with a handful of Republicans, voting amid national concerns about a spike in hate crimes during the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas. Hate crimes overall increased in the U.S. last year, according to a report released by the FBI earlier this month.
