Madagascar, 1970-1972. En la base militar 181, conviven varias familias del ejército francés. Entre ellas, la familia López, con los padres Robert y Colette y sus tres hijos. El pequeño de ellos es Thomas, un jovencito muy imaginativo y observador, amante de los cómics. Son años en que Madagascar, ya declarado país independiente, intenta desligarse de la presencia y la influencia francesa. El desmantelamiento de la base militar parece, por tanto, bastante inminente.

Partly seen from the perspective of a child, this movie is doused in plush fantasy and allegorical devices.
