A build-up of excess inventory has been exacerbated by high production and freight costs, the introduction by the United States of countervailing duties on three major exporting nations and – in the case of India – a series of damaging reports into industry malpractice.

A decade after it first launched the brand, Austral Fisheries is embarking on a fresh drive to break into European markets with its ‘Glacier 51’ toothfish caught deep in Australia’s sub-Antarctic waters. Caught at depths of more than two kilometers and served in high-end restaurants, toothfish is undoubtedly “the rock star of the sea,” according to Rhys Arangio, general manager of science and policy at Austral.

Norwegian cod farmer Ode is betting on rising demand in the US and UK markets as the driving force behind the next phase of its expansion, its co-founder and CEO told IntraFish. The company expects to produce around 11,000 metric tons of cod this year, a number that will rise to “a bit less than 20,000 tons” in 2025, Ola Kvalheim said in an interview.

Farmgate shrimp prices in China suffered another downturn in recent weeks due to weather and a government-enforced power outage, according to a leading shrimp sector analyst. “Prices have come down lately,” said Ida Seljevoll Skancke, an analyst with Norwegian seafood data and analysis provider Kontali, told IntraFish at the recent Seafood Expo Global in Barcelona.

Norwegian land-based trout farmer Hima Seafood is scouting two locations in the United States for construction of a new plant to serve the American market, with construction scheduled to begin by the end of next year. Preben Asbjornrod, project manager at Hima, said one of the potential sites was in North Carolina and the other in Montana. Ultimately, he said, the location would be determined by the issuance of the required government permits.

Turkish seafood giant Kilic Deniz expects a 20 percent increase in turnover this year following its recent acquisition of rival Agromey, a deal that created the world’s largest producer of sea bass and bream. The company’s second harvest of trout in the Black Sea will also be a key contributor to revenue this year, Kilic Executive Vice President Sinan Kiziltan told IntraFish, as the new product wins customers in East Asia.

On the shore of the Caspian Sea, a privately owned enterprise from Azerbaijan is aiming to develop its caviar brand as a leading light in sustainable aquaculture. Azerbaijan Fish Farm has invested around $20 million (€18.7 million) in construction of a plant where it grows sturgeon from its own endemic broodstock, said Rufat Tabasaranskiy, chairman of parent company Lu-Mun Holding.

Minh Phu Seafood, Vietnam’s largest shrimp farmer, is planning a 70 percent increase in export volumes as the global market works its way back to pre-COVID levels, its founder and CEO said. The company expects to increase annual exports to 70,000 metric tons of shrimp worth around $720 million (€675 million), Le Van Quang told IntraFish, possibly as soon as this year. This compares with just 41,000 metric tons worth $450 million (€422 million) in 2023.
