1947 saw the first edition of the Dauphiné. Like many bike races it was created to increase sales of local newspaper Dauphiné Libéré. It also coincided with the return of the Tour de France after World War II. Simon Yates played this Giro d’Italia to perfection. He lay in wait, a silent assassin lurking in the shadows, barely raising his head above the parapet. It ultimately kept him out of trouble, and it won him a maiden Giro d’Italia title, a Trofeo Senza Fine for the mantlepiece and a maglia rosa to hang on the wall. If you would like to ask your own question you just need to Login, Register or subscribe. For the first week, Yates’s name barely came up in discussions.
