The maglia nera was to the Giro d’Italia what the lanterne rouge is to the Tour de France: something to mark the last placed rider in the general classification. It only featured in the race for six years in the mid 20th century, but it made quite the impression, and I think it’s time to bring it back.

The Tour of Britain Women, scheduled to run from 5-8th June 2025, will be broadcast live on BBC Sport. The four-stage race from Tees Valley to Glasgow will be free to watch on BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website and app. Content will also be on the BBC Sport social media channels. The coverage comes as part of the BBC’s ‘women’s summer of sport’, joining a host of sports including football, tennis and athletics that will be broadcast live on the BBC’s channels.

Tour de France organisers ASO are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Champs-Élysées finale with a twist. Stage 21 of this year’s race will end on a circuit reminiscent of the Olympic road race that includes three ascents of the Côte de la Butte Montmartre (1.1km, 5.9%), the last coming just 6km from the finish line.
