Brabantse Pijl 2025 preview: Route, favourites, how to watch and start list

Classics season continues with Brabantse Pijl (or La Flèche Brabançonne) taking place on Friday 18th April 2025. They’re the last races on the calendar for both women and men before Ardennes Week kicks off with the Amstel Gold Race. Belgian rider Edwig Van Hooydonck has won the men’s race the most, with four victories between 1987 and 1995.

Only 11 riders have won both the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix in the same year. The two biggest cobbled Classics in the calendar take place just a week apart, but it’s not common for a rider to be able to win both. While they share their cobbled nature, Flanders and Roubaix are quite different. The French pavé sectors are far more harsh, with the cobblestones taller, regularly not even, separated by fairly substantial drops, and many of the roads have significant dips from vehicle tracks.

Mathieu van der Poel lines up at the Tour of Flanders this weekend as one of a very select few to have won the race three times, and will cement his legend as the outright most successful rider over 109 editions should he come out on top this weekend. The Tour of Flanders is one of the oldest cycling races on the men’s calendar having been first held in 1913. This year marks the 109th edition of the race, kicking off from Bruges and with over 17 cobbled hellingen on the 268.9km route to Oudenaarde. It’s one of the five Monuments of cycling and only the very best can win it, so it begs the question: what’s been the most successful strategy over the years?

The 2025 pro racing season got into full swing in March, with the spring Classics Opening Weekend kicking things off on the 1st and plenty of action following throughout the month. We had the first women’s Milan-San Remo for 20 years, news of another British Grand Départ and loads of top racing to enjoy, from cobbled Classics to week-long stage races, with almost all the top riders getting back to competition. It hasn’t been sunshine and rainbows for everyone, though.

Beginning in 1977 as a three-day race on the men’s calendar, Brugge-De Panne transitioned into a one-day Classic in 2018 and was upgraded to WorldTour level the following year. The first edition of the women’s Brugge-De Panne also ran in 2018. The races begin in Bruges and head to a circuit just over 40k in length. The course is susceptible to heavy wind, but the race usually comes down to a bunch sprint in De Panne.

Not many people can say a near-300km Monument is ‘too easy’, but for Tadej Pogačar at Milan-San Remo, that feeling is all too real. The world champion thrives on the toughest climbs, in the most punishing conditions, whether it’s on gravel or cobbles, on a 100km attack or a kick to the line, but at La Classicissima he just can’t get clear and doesn’t quite have the finishing sprint.
