Choosing to live along the Strand—a 22-mile walking and biking path connecting many of Los Angeles’s famous beaches—takes someone who doesn’t mind being on display. Although one Boston-based contemporary artist was looking forward to being an active part of her Hermosa Beach neighborhood, she also wanted to ensure that her future home provided enough privacy.

Yet the town house where interior designer Patrick Sutton and his wife Tracy reside stands just blocks from the heart of Baltimore’s animated Fells Point. It’s just a water’s bend away from the luxe Sagamore Pendry Hotel, an early-20th-century property Sutton recast for modern sojourns.
