    Summerville won another tight playoff game at home. Summerville (33-0) handed Byrnes (28-4) a 3-0 loss May 26 at Green Wave Park in the opening game of the 5A, Division 1 Softball Championship Series. Now the Green Wave is only a win away from its third consecutive state softball title. The Rebels would have to beat Summerville twice to take home the championship trophy. Game 2 is scheduled for May 28 at Byrnes.

    Combined Arlen Sumersett and William Smith won nearly 80 matches for the Summerville Boys Tennis program during their varsity careers. Sumersett, who won 31 matches for the Green Wave, capped his senior season by participating in the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association North-South All-Star Tennis match. The match pits six of the top six senior tennis players from the northern part of the state up against six of the top seniors from the southern part in a friendly yet competitive match.

    It wasn’t for a lack of trying, but Ashley Ridge was unable to blemish J.L. Mann’s perfection. J.L. Mann (26-0) held off a feisty Ashley Ridge (22-4) team May 23 during the 5A, Division 1 Boys Soccer Championship. The Patriots capped the season with a 5-3 win over the Swamp Foxes at Memorial Stadium in Columbia to secure the division State Championship. “They are No. 3 in the nation for a reason,” said Ashley Ridge coach Nate Harris.

    For the third straight season, Summerville has advanced to the state softball finals. The Green Wave is chasing its third consecutive, and third overall, state softball title. Summerville (32-0) faces Byrnes (28-3) in the 2025 5A, Division 1 Softball Championship Series. The Green Wave hosts Game 1 of the best-of-three series at 6 p.m. Monday, May 26 at Green Wave Park. Summerville is riding an 82-game winning streak.

    Ke’Shon Washington may be the first Summerville High School athlete to sign with two colleges during his senior year. From the Carolinas to Pennsylvania and even Illinois, colleges are scooping up Green Wave athletes. Ten Summerville athletes signed a national letter of intent May 13 during a ceremony in the school’s auditorium.
