The pitching was once again strong. The slumbering lumber awakened for a bit. The baserunning was smart and sharp. The Mets got a little bit of everything on Thursday night as they kicked off a seven-game home stand in style with a 4-1 victory over St. Louis on Thursday night before 38,246 at Citi Field.

Scoring runs was supposed to be – and maybe will be – one of the Mets’ strengths this season. So far, not so much. Pete Alonso is off to a tremendous start at the plate and carried a .365/.474/.730 slash line into Thursday night’s game against the Cardinals at Citi Field, but the same cannot be said for the rest of the team. Zuby Ejiofor looks natural crashing the backboards for St. John’s at the Garden. However the Red Storm star looked very out of place on Wednesday afternoon on the pitcher’s mound at Citi Field. That was right until he made a smooth delivery of the ceremonial first pitch that went over the plate and into the glove of former Mets star and St. John’s alumnus John Franco as most of the 2024-25 Storm and coach Rick Pitino stood in a semicircle behind the catcher’s box.
