Rick Pitino has returned to the basketball sidelines with great success as the St. John’s coach, but no one should expect him to replace Tom Thibodeau and reprise is role as coach of the Knicks.

That which seemed destined materialized quickly on Saturday at Citi Field. The Mets looked every bit like a team that had four times the number of wins as the Rockies, as starter Kodai Senga turned in perhaps his finest pitching performance of the season and the Mets scored runs in bunches – four in the first inning and three in the fourth inning – in an 8-2 pasting before 41,681. The Mets (36-22) have won six of their last seven games and now have captured three straight series.

Paul Blackburn will return to the mound on Monday in Los Angeles when the Mets open a four-game series with a Dodgers club that ousted them in the National League Championship Series en route to winning the 2024 World Series. The biggest surprise on Friday night at Citi Field was that it didn’t rain during the baseball game and the postgame fireworks were still cancelled due to inclement weather. The Mets beat the foundering Rockies, a team that is yet to record its 10th win of the season with more than one third of it completed. Starter David Peterson continued a run of solid pitching performances. And the Mets got three solo homers — two by Francisco Lindor — but went 0-for-2 with runners in scoring position.

It may seem out of place to look at a team that is 12 games over .500 and focus on its biggest flaw. But there is no avoiding it with the Mets. They went into Friday night’s series opener against the Rockies at Citi Field with a glaring .211 batting average with runners in scoring position. That ranks them 28th of 30 in the MLB and dead last in the National League. Though they win a lot more than they lose, everyone in the organization is painfully aware of it, especially lately.

Nice shot of St. John’s coach Rick Pitino at the Garden at the end of Knicks big win over Celtics. Could be a lot of big wins for the Red Storm coming in the building next season. #sjubb
