An Oakville trustee had a nation-wide lobby group in her corner but was once again unsuccessful at bringing back a controversial policy. At the April 8 policy meeting, Helena Karabela attempted to add an amendment to a Halton Catholic District School Board (HCDSB) policy that would restrict fundraising for any group, including subsidiaries, affiliates and associates that in any way supports abortion, contraception, euthanasia or human embryonic stem cell research.

The cost to parents for multiple optional school programs went up this year at the Halton Catholic District School Board (HCDSB). Oakville trustee Chris Saunders requested a report at the March 18 board meeting disclosing all current and anticipated activity fees charged to students in the last two academic years. The motion, which was ultimately defeated, was the result of growing concern by the trustee over increasing costs to student families.

Halton Region has a brand new set of ridings for the 2025 federal election on April 28. As a result, voters will find themselves in either re-arranged or new ridings. The changes are the result of the redrawing of boundaries by the Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission which has split the region into six ridings. There is significant crossover with some ridings encompassing pieces of two different municipalities. It may be a little confusing, so here’s what you need to know.

Halton Catholic District School Board (HCDSB) staff is travelling to distant locations as part of international student recruitment efforts. At the March 18 meeting of the board of trustees, a report revealed that the HCDSB spent $11,142 on a trip to Dubai in February. A staff member attended the International Consultants for Education and Fairs (ICEF) event, with the goal of recruiting more international students to Halton.
