PST ART lights up Los Angeles—and the skies beyondIT WAS A CLEAR DAY, the kind where you can see forever. Especially if you’re standing on the airy terrace of Los Angeles’s Getty Center one mid-September morning. I’m here for the launch of the third iteration of Getty’s “Pacific Standard Time” program, newly rebranded into the far more keyword-searchable PST ART. The 900-foot elevation, with its sweeping god’s-eye view, prompts a little excavation through a few layers of history.

FOR NEARLY SIX DECADES, the subversive Art & Language collective has made art that reflects its countercultural position in the world, all while rejecting the confines of an identifiable or distinctive aesthetic. Mel Ramsden (b. 1944, Ilkeston, UK), among the most prominent artists associated with Conceptual art and one of two remaining members of the collective, died on July 23.

My relationship with Bob became even more intimate through our sick-on-sick bonding. In 1990, due to a complication from an HIV infection, I needed a splenectomy. The procedure was stalled by a day and I was unable to tell my friends about it. Bob and Sheree, however, got the news—I was greeted by their faces and voices while coming out of heavy anesthesia in the hospital. “Twenty-five staples! I should have brought my camera,” said Sheree, which, of course, would have been completely appropriate.
