Jasper City Council members Tuesday morning approved using the Jasper Civic Center as the lone voting site for the city’s municipal election in August. The use of a centralized voting site, council members said, will eliminate any confusion caused by residents who aren’t sure where they need to go to cast a ballot in an election. “I get phone calls every election from people who are confused about where they need to go,” council member Jennifer Smith said.

DORA — Dora City Council members tabled discussion on paving a parking lot at the old armory on Sharon Boulevard where the city’s new storm shelter has been placed. Council members discussed the issue at last Thursday night’s city council meeting for some 30 minutes before tabling the issue until the next council meeting. The discussion centered on how many handicapped parking spots would be needed, as well as whether asphalt or concrete should be used in paving the parking lot.

Most homeowners in Jasper should expect to see a decrease in their homeowners insurance rates later this summer thanks to the Jasper Fire Department. Interim Fire Chief Chris Uptain announced to Jasper City Council members Friday that he was informed earlier in the week that the city’s ISO rating had dropped to its lowest rating in several years. Uptain was named as the department’s interim fire chief on Jan. 29 after the retirements of Chief Dante Fields and Deputy Chief Heath Smith.
