Last November, I wrote about canine distemper. Still, since the Tehama County Animal Care Center is continuing to see an increase in the disease in the multitude of dogs that are being admitted, it is apparent that people are not paying attention. If you believe your dog cannot contract canine distemper because the virus is not in Tehama County, you are wrong, and if your dog is unvaccinated, your error can kill him.

Cats communicate in a variety of ways and, for us to increase our understanding, it is important to learn and appreciate all the various forms of communication. Even though a cat cannot communicate like we do, it will relay its emotions through a series of body gestures and vocalizations. The body language can be subtle and wide-ranging, with the cat using its ears, eyes, tail, body postures and vocalizations to communicate feelings.

Mary Ann Evans, better known as George Eliot, wrote, “We long for an affection altogether ignorant of our faults. Heaven has accorded this to us in the uncritical canine attachment.” Personally, I prefer J.W. Stephens’ succinct quote, “Be the kind of person your dog thinks you are”. I’ll go out on a limb and say that the love our dogs have for us is one of the purest affections we shall ever experience. Too bad most of us, myself included, are not as worthy as they believe we are.
