We’re still working on toilet training Atlas — so far, he’s got a 100% success rate so long as he has nothing on his lower half, but obviously this isn’t a feasible tactic for when he leaves the house so please, all suggestions welcome! — so this morning the TV is broken again (“so hard to fix the TV!” Atlas proclaims) while Atlas has his breakfast.

This morning I wake up feeling positively exhausted, which makes little to no sense as Roman’s actually sleeping better than ever at the moment, in one big chunk from around 8pm to 3am, at which point I get up to feed him before putting him back in his bed — yes, his own bed! — until 7am. Maybe it’ll take a while for my body to get the message that we’re not being tortured by sleep deprivation any more.

I’ve started taking walks around mine and the adjoining neighborhoods. These estates are the only walking tracks available to me unless I want to get in the car, and I don’t – I want to go for a walk. Getting in the car is a different thing. When I get in the car, I am, inevitably, going to do a chore or other.

Today is the first day of the rest of my life! is how I would usually think about this, an ordinary Monday, that just happens to be day one of a new block of training with Empowered Movement, a programme my friend Sophie bought me three months’ worth of as a gift (truly, I don’t deserve friends like this).

I was going to put this at the end, but then I thought, why not start with the good news? No one ever starts with the good news. They start with the bad, so the good news can act as a sort of palate cleanser, a chaser, a mood-booster after the depressing bits. That’s bullshit. Sometimes you want to start with the good stuff.

I set my alarm for 7am every day, but inevitably snooze, cuddled up against my personal hot water bottle (Roman) until 7.30am at least. Today I go one further and don’t get up until 7.45am, meaning there’s a bit of a rush to get Atlas up, dressed and fed before the bus arrives at about 8.30am.

We spend Easter Sunday – Brandin and I, and our boys (four, at last count, although sometimes it feels like a dozen, or more); Brandin’s siblings and their partners, kids, sometimes a dog or two; uncles, aunts, partners and cousins, at Brandin’s grandma’s house, a little north of Fort Wayne. Lunch, an egg hunt, and nonsensical conversations are the order of the day.

I have quite a full calendar this week – for me – in that I’m meeting two friends and I have book club midweek, so it feels slightly less boring than usual that I’m staying home with Roman and Atlas today, as Atlas has a bit of a cough and I’m sure his teachers would rather I be the one listening to him coughing all day. I make Atlas a breakfast of toast and fruit snacks, then I make myself porridge while Roman complains in the swing.

I run a hand through it in the shower, in front of the TV, absent-mindedly while brushing my teeth, one hand clamped around my electric toothbrush, never sure if I’m doing it right (should I just concentrate on one tooth at a time, allowing the brush to do the movement, or am I supposed to continue see-sawing around my mouth? Who knows?).
