    A New School student was arrested outside of the University Center after two counter-protesters pepper sprayed multiple protesters today at a rally to support the Faculty Solidarity Encampment. Protesters then sat in front of a New York Police Department car that held the arrested TNS student, leading to the arrest of over eight more people.

    The New School does not intend to press charges against students arrested at the Gaza Solidarity Encampments on May 3, university spokesperson Amy Malsin told the New School Free Press. In an email, Malsin confirmed statements from the Executive Deans of TNS that the administration would not pursue criminal charges. The Deans’ statement, which was sent in a university-wide email, also states that the university plans to provide expeditious review of the temporary suspensions issued to students.

    Students who were arrested on Friday morning at the Gaza Solidarity Encampment have asked The New School community to strike in solidarity with Palestine and until their demands are met. However, some community members legally don’t have the right to do so. In an Instagram post today, The New School Students for Justice in Palestine called for TNS students, staff, and faculty to stop all school-related activities, including withholding grades and a boycott of graduation.

    Today, at 11:30 a.m. The New School’s Students for Justice in Palestine (TNS SJP) established a Gaza Solidarity Encampment inside the University Center, located at 63 Fifth Avenue.

    The CVS next to The New School University Center, located at 65 Fifth Ave., sold unauthorized TNS merchandise, including cups, mugs, and water bottles, earlier last month. The store sold merchandise that was approved by the university during the spring 2023 semester. The merchandise put out recently on March 4 is identical to the items sold last year, however, this time, they were not authorized by the university.
