YOLO COUNTY, Calif. — The murder trial of former UC Davis student Carlos Dominguez took an emotional turn Tuesday as the prosecution began its cross-examination, questioning Dominguez about the fatal stabbings. It was the second day of testimony from the 22-year-old, who has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.

Taking the stand Monday in a Yolo County courtroom, Dominguez spoke in a calm and factual tone, at first answering the defense’s questions with simple yes or no responses. But his testimony quickly turned emotional and graphic as he described a troubled childhood in El Salvador. Dominguez also admitted to having schizophrenia within minutes of taking the stand. Raised by his grandmother, Dominguez said he did not know the whereabouts of his parents for much of his early life.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — In Del Paso Heights, reactions are mixed to the opening of a new splash pad at a Sacramento park that had been closed since 2018. Some nearby residents say they’re grateful the park has reopened and are hopeful more improvements are coming. Others feel the updates fall short of what the neighborhood deserves. Sacramento City Councilmember Roger Dickinson joined community members at Mama Marks Park on Saturday for the grand opening of the new splash pad.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Advocates say Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents are sitting in on hearings and taking people into custody. At Sacramento Immigration Court on Wednesday, community organizers, elected officials and legal experts took a stance in support of immigrants. "Standing together to denounce a disturbing escalation in immigration enforcement tactics," said Marcus Tang, executive director of California Immigration Project.
