Te Awamutu will seek to end a winless run that dates back more than a year when they host Tokoroa in a Waikato division one football clash on Saturday. The Reds managed four draws in 21 outings in the Southern Conference last season, and the demise this season of the Southern Conference Championship has them effectively stepping down two rungs. The league, an amalgam of last year’s Southern Conference championship and Waikato first division, threw up a couple of surprises last weekend.

Cambridge have tasted their first league defeat in more than a year. The newly promoted Northern League championship side was beaten 2-0 by former New Zealand footballing powerhouse North Shore in Auckland last weekend. Hamilton Wanderers’ second win from two – 4-2 away to Manukau – left them top of the table, but no other Waikato sides in the league followed up opening day wins.

Waipā’s interest in football’s Southern Conference men’s league has evaporated. The league – one step down from the Northern League which takes in Auckland clubs – last season saw Cambridge crowned champions and Te Awamutu finish bottom. It starts on March 29 with neither club involved. Cambridge’s top team is now in the Northern League – and hosts Onehunga on March 22 – while Te Awamutu had been lined up for a drop down to a place in League One, won last year by neighbours Ōtorohanga.

A figure of eight shaped roundabout is being suggested for drivers turning into Matangi Rd from Morrinsville Rd – State Highway 26. Hamilton City Council has presented an elongated roundabout which would include both the Matangi intersection and the Silverdale one a short distance away. The road is used by 13,000 vehicles a day. The $11 million project would be funded by Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency.

With one of their own near the top of the goalscoring charts in the English Premier League, it was no surprise to see two Cambridge Football Club junior musters being busy affairs. The Saturday muster for boys and mixed teams attracted about 120 children from ninth to 14th grade and there were more on Monday when the girls’ muster was held for under-12, Under-14 and the new WaiBop Under-16 league teams.

An all-kiwi cruiserweight boxing clash between Te Awamutu’s Floyd Masson and David Nykia is being talk up following Masson’s latest win. Masson scored a unanimous eight round points decision win over Nigerian Austine Nnamdi in Brisbane last weekend – it was a shut out on one card and Masson won seven rounds on the other two. Masson could now be paired with a number of leading Australasian fighters including Australian Jason Whateley.
