Correction to: Nature Sustainability https://doi.org/10.1038/s41893-021-00817-0, published online 6 December 2021. In the version of the article initially published, there was an error in the code which resulted in the Western Madagascar row of Table 2 to include incorrect values in columns “D” and “Overall”. In column “D”, “VU” has been corrected to “EN” and in “Overall”, “EN (C2a)” has been corrected to “EN (C2a, D1a)”. Additionally, Supplementary Tables 7, 12–14 have also been updated.
