1 INTRODUCTION The need to address ongoing loss of ecosystems has been recognized through an explicit goal to conserve ecosystems in the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD, 2022). This multi-lateral treaty on biodiversity comprises four goals and 23 targets, as well as a monitoring framework consisting of 26 indicators to track progress.

In the version of the article initially published, there was an error in the code which resulted in the Western Madagascar row of Table 2 to include incorrect values in columns “D” and “Overall”. 1 INTRODUCTION Coral reefs are one of the most biodiverse and valuable ecosystem types in the world (Adey, 2000; Anthony et al., 2017) but are also among the most threatened (Bellwood et al., 2019; Burke et al., 2011; Halpern et al., 2015; Hoegh-Guldberg et al., 2017) due to climate-driven and local pressures increasing in magnitude and frequency (Anthony et al., 2017; Beyer et al., 2018; Costa et al., 2020).

AbstractCountries have committed to conserving and restoring ecosystems after signing the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF). The IUCN Red List of Ecosystems (RLE) will serve as a headline indicator to track progress of countries towards achieving this goal, and to guide action across the GBFs targets.
