After Cal Men’s Swimming and Diving placed 2nd at the NCAA Championships last Saturday, the next California Golden Bears to vie for national titles are Cal Women’s Gymnastics and Cal Rugby. No.6 Cal Women’s Gymnastics (28-3), the 2024 NCAA runner-ups, are in the Alabama Regional this weekend. They will look to book a returning trip to the NCAA Championships in Fort Worth, Texas in two weeks.

It did not take long for Cal Men’s Swimming and Diving to earn their first national title of the week (and Cal Athletics’ first of the 2024-25 school year). Not counting the pandemic-shortened 2019-20 school year that did not have most winter nor any spring national championships, Cal Athletics has won a national championship (team, individual, relay, pair, boat, etc.) every year since 1972-73. The first national championship of the 2024-25 school year will likely come this week from Federal Way, Washington where Cal Men’s Swimming and Diving will compete in the NCAA Championships.

In case you missed it, Cal Women’s Gymnastics has become a national powerhouse. The steady improvement of the program since it was nearly cut back in 2010 has it near the mountain top of the sport. In 2024, Cal Women’s Gymnastics not only made the NCAA Championship Final for the first time in program history, but the Golden Bears finished just behind LSU as the national runner-up. Cal got to perform on national TV then (the NCAA Championship Final session was on ABC).

The move to the ACC this season meant the chance to earn their way into the NCAA postseason. While purists probably prefer the old Pac-12 home-and-home schedule with all seven opponents as the better way to decide the conference champion, California Men’s Soccer Golden Bears (8-7-2, 2-4-2 in the ACC regular season) have fully taken advantage of this late chance to extend their season. Bears embraced the role of road warriors in taking down North Carolina and Duke.

Ryan Coe’s pair of 54-yard field goals on Friday night in Winston-Salem, North Carolina were pivotal to Cal Football’s first-ever ACC victory. Even though the final margin was 10 points due to a late TD, Cal Football needed those six points to fend off the late Wake Forest comeback attempt. Coe is not the only California Golden Bears to have kicked well in the state of North Carolina this past week, however.
