One of Ron Rivera’s first acts as Cal general manager was to quell a donor revolt by leading a donation drive to raise a million dollars for the football team to support their ongoing transfer portal efforts. Cal fans and donors quickly shattered that goal last week, raising half a million and getting a matching half a million. He isn’t stopping at the initial goal.

So much for that. When we looked at the portal back in February, for the most part Cal had positionally replaced what they had lost to graduation/portal departures. Cal Rugby is seeking its 29th rugby 15s (34th overall, including Rugby 7s) national title on Saturday in Indianapolis, Indiana. In Cal’s way is Life, a school and the obstacle that got the better of the Golden Bears at this stage of the D1A Championship back in 2018 and 2019.

Cal continues their recovery from losing five running backs in one week to the transfer portal, including their top runners Jaydn Ott and Jaivian Thomas. They started the rebuild yesterday by grabbing UTSA running back Brandon High. They have their second running back from within the ACC, landing NC State runner Kendrick Raphael. Raphael was third on the Wolfpack last year in rushing with 425 yards on 78 carries (6.5 yards per attempt) and three touchdowns.

It’s been a hard few weeks for Cal at running back. Star Jaydn Ott is off to Oklahoma. Potential starting back Jaivian Thomas transferred to UCLA. Kadarius Calloway, Byron Cardwell, Justin Williams-Thomas all entered the portal. Cal has started to stem the bleeding, as new running back coach Julian Griffin brought in one of his former players from UT San Antonio. Meet Brandon High! High led UTSA with eight rushing touchdowns in his freshman year, while also gaining 495 rushing yards.
