    Let’s take one final look at forwarding planes and accelerated forwarding planes before we leave this topic. What if you wanted to develop a device specializing in processing and switching packets, but the capabilities you need to develop are unavailable in any commercial hardware forwarding engine? While one option would certainly be DPDK, discussed in the previous post in this series, there is another, more recent option: Extended Berkeley Packet Filters (eBPF).

Her identity, life and art are influenced by her racial and cultural heritages and the complexities of being a brown woman in the Midwest. She came to MSU in 2006 and is a professor of painting and drawing in the Department of Art, Art History, and Design in MSU’s College of Arts and Letters.     In part 1 of this series, I discussed general problems with router Forwarding Engine (FEs). This post looks at possible solutions. Before diving into internal interfaces between the Forwarding Table (FIB) and FE, let’s look at a few attempts to build an interface between external processes and forwarding state: the Interface to the Routing System (I2RS) and OpenFlow. The illustration below shows the difference between these two. The first difference is where they inject forwarding information.

    Following his Sept. 29 investiture, Michigan State University President Kevin M. Guskiewicz, Ph.D., announced one of his first initiatives was to bring “MSU to Michigan,” and he did so by leading MSU’s inaugural Spartan Bus Tour. We set out from campus Monday morning Oct. 21 from the Kellogg Center. (0:20) President Guskiewicz opens the tour. (1:14) Our first stop was in Mount Pleasant to visit the Ziibiwing Center of Anishinabe Culture and Lifeways.
