A fetus would count as a dependent for Michigan taxes under a bill getting hearing Tuesday before the state House Finance Committee. The bill would apply to people who are at least 10 weeks pregnant by the end of the tax year. A doctor would have to verify that pregnancy status. State Representative Gina Johnsen (R-Lake Orion) sponsors the bill. In an interview, Johnsen said she hopes it encourages more people to start families.
Meridian Township residents will vote on a funding plan in August for a new senior, community center

The Meridian Township Board has approved a funding plan for a new senior and community center, which will be on voters’ ballots during the August election. The board voted Thursday on the plan, choosing from five different proposals. If approved, the plan will mean a .9051 millage increase to property taxes which will raise residents’ property taxes by 90 cents on each thousand dollars of property value.

The city of East Lansing could redirect funds from its Parking Division to address a $3.1 million deficit in its upcoming budget. City Manager Robert Belleman explained at a town hall, Wednesday, that under the plan, the city would charge the Parking Division a leasing fee on city-run parking structures. “Our parking structures and surface lots occupy valuable land downtown that, if they were not there, somebody would buy, build and we would capture those taxes,” Belleman said.
