Many chances for rain this week

The chance for storms starts to pick up again Wednesday afternoon and evening, mostly cloudy skies will be around before. There’s a chance for some rain in far SE Nebraska early Wednesday, but most of the state will remain dry until Wednesday evening. Our StormCast weather model below shows how that warm front will push into Nebraska as the evening progresses.

After a busy Thursday night that saw several reports of large hail and tornadoes (below), we quiet down for a while. We start the day with temperatures in the middle 40s, which is actually a little above average. It’ll be a cool and gray Friday with highs between 50s and 60 degrees. We won’t warm up much for Easter weekend either. Highs will be close to 60 degrees each day with a rain chance on Sunday. We do warm back up next week but have many chances for some much needed rain.

Wrapping up the work week, Friday looks to be warm and windy. Storms are possible, but mainly northwest of us. We are in a level 1 "Marginal Risk" with a level 2 "Slight Risk" just to our northwest. Storm chances for the above Marginal to Slight Risk will be near us by Friday evening (below). Then as we move into Saturday, we have another Marginal to Slight Risk for severe weather. Timing for this looks to be in the morning and then again in the evening (see below).
Storms possible on and off through Thursday

SEVERE WEATHER POTENTIAL will come in two waves Thursday. 1st wave: Storms move along the Kansas Nebraska border early Thursday morning. Storms may make it as far north as I80, but the better chance is south. (see below) 2nd wave: Storms start up in central Nebraska Thursday afternoon and move east through the evening hours. Because of this, we have a level 1 and 2 “Marginal” to “Slight Risk” for severe storms during this time frame.

Storms are possible through the first part of Thursday, then partly cloudy skies will be around the second half of the day. The best chance for rain will be mid-morning as a frontal boundary moves through. It should be out of our area by noon. Temperatures will warm from the 50s in the morning, into the 70s by the afternoon. As we move into Friday, the chance for strong to severe weather increases. The better chance will be to the north in the Slight Risk area.

With Easter coming up this weekend, I’m sure we are all hoping for a nice day! Over the years there have been plenty of Easters that have been just about right with temperatures in the low 70s and sunny skies. But areas around the country have also seen its share of severe weather on Easter. For instance, several years ago in the year 2000 there was a tornado outbreak in Louisiana and Texas on Easter Sunday.
Air quality issues followed by storm chances

There is an Air Quality Alert for moderate to unhealthy air quality for sensitive groups. Prescribed burns in the central plains (Flint Hills in Kansas) may affect the air quality in Nebraska. South winds will bring smoke and haze with it Tuesday night through Wednesday morning. Most of Wednesday will be dry and very mild with highs in the lower 80s. The chance for storms increases late Wednesday into very early Thursday. Then again Thursday afternoon and evening.

After a windy and cooler day Monday, Tuesday will warm back up and the wind relaxes a bit. Lots of 60s are expected for highs on Tuesday, but a few 70s may show up west. We warm up Tuesday, really warm up Wednesday, the get down right hot on Thursday. We’ll be a couple of degrees away from a record high in Lincoln!Looking at that storm chance on Thursday, the Storm Prediction Center has eastern Nebraska with a chance for severe storms.
Smoke and haze likely this weekend

A warm weekend is headed our way, but it’s going to be windy with quite a bit of smoke and haze. This is the time of year that parts of Kansas (Flint Hills) does a lot of controlled burning to improve the productivity of the range land for ranching practices. That, unfortunately, can mean a lot of smoke and haze if the wind is blowing from the south. When it does, like it will this weekend, we will have poor air quality and Air Quality Alerts are issued.
