    The weather outside was on and off, but the action in the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex was definitely on during Sunday events at the Spring Classic Indoor Rodeo. The final day of Spring indoor rodeo events for the Interior Rodeo Event Association in Williams Lake included wild horse racing, bull riding, bareback riding, junior steer riding, open barrels, junior barrels, pee wee barrels, and saddle bronc riding.

    A B.C. Provincial Court judge sentenced Travis Storoschuk to a total of 214 days in custody and 24 months probation on April 17. He will also be subject to a prohibition from possessing a firearm for five years. Having been in pre-trial custody for 153 days, Storoschuk was given credit for 230 days of jail time, with the judge crediting him with a half day for every day already served, meaning he would be released on Thursday, April 17.

    Ervin Charleyboy, former chief of Tsi Del Del First Nation, will soon be on trial for historic sex-related offences. Charleyboy was in court in Williams Lake for a preliminary hearing April 9. The former chief sat in the courtroom listening to his lawyer question one of two women who have come forward as alleged victims, accusing him of multiple incidents over a number of years.

    As humans we can be slow learners, and slow to change, but it makes my heart so happy to see the progress finally taking place to restore fire on the land in our area. This work will not only help make our community safer, but our forest ecosystems healthier. Burning over the weekend appeared to be taken in stride by residents. The community and its leaders now recognize how critical this work is after many years of hard lessons and public education.

    Williams Lake Wildfire Risk Reduction and FireSmart Coordinator Taya Vanderkop-Girard presented to city council at the regular council meeting on April 1. Vanderkop-Girard attained a Master's degree in Environmental Public Health and studied at the Centre for Wildfire Coexistence at the University of British Columbia. At the end of January, she began her new role with the city to help implement the Community Wildfire Resiliency Plan (CWRP) which is currently in development.
