    A supercomputer hosted at a NextDC facility in Melbourne’s northern suburbs has been switched on, about nine months after it was promised. The machine, based on Nvidia DGX H200 systems, is run by La Trobe’s Australian Centre for Artificial Intelligence in Medical Innovation (ACAMI), which was launched last year. It will use AI “to develop immunotherapies, cancer vaccines, med-tech and healthcare,” La Trobe said in a statement.

    Telstra has commercially launched Starlink-backed satellite-to-mobile messaging just weeks after live trials, albeit initially only for Samsung Galaxy S25 series devices “updated with the latest software”. The service, which allows the transmission of text messages when outside the telco’s mobile network coverage area, is “available for consumer and small business customers on Telstra month-to-month mobile plans”, consumer executive Tom Beach said.

    Firefighters in Victoria say that critical IT systems have failed six times in as many weeks, with the union asking for a parliamentary inquiry. The United Firefighters Union said Sunday that “three separate IT systems” failed on April 26, May 2, May 24, May 26, May 27 and May 31. The systems are used “to dispatch trucks, track crews, coordinate resources” and locate hydrants, the union said in a statement.
