Tampa police say the driver behind an explosives threat that shut down a stretch of Dale Mabry Highway on Thursday evening had fallen asleep behind the wheel and was woken up by officers before he claimed to have a bomb in his car. The backstory: The Tampa Police Department says officers responded to the intersection of N. Dale Mabry Hwy. and Columbus Dr. shortly after 6:30 p.m. after getting reports of a sleeping driver impeding the flow of traffic.

Polk County deputies say an illegal immigrant faces a manslaughter charge after causing his co-worker's death at a construction site, then lying about what happened. The backstory: The Polk County Sheriff's Office says investigators responded Wednesday to reports of an industrial accident at the Grand Pointe Apartments, a new complex off Founders Way in Davenport. Deputies say they found the body of Jose Lopez near the front end of the loading bucket of a skid steer.

This is, at the very least, a significant setback for the future of the Rays in the Tampa Bay area. Another big turn in the long "will they or won't they" saga surrounding a new ballpark.

In a letter to Pinellas County commissioners, the Rays say the county not approving the $312.5M bond in October makes it impossible to have the new stadium ready by 2028, and they say 2029 will result in significantly higher costs… AND they say they’ve already wasted $50M
