The carrier will end several cross-country routes. In its latest network shake-up, Alaska is cutting service on four routes. These moves include several changes to transcontinental services. On Aug. 20, the airline plans to end flights from Los Angeles and San Francisco to Washington Dulles. Both routes were relics of Virgin America, beginning in 2009. Alaska acquired the airline in 2016.

The airline will cut capacity on this route. American is shaking up its network in the Northeast this summer. The Fort Worth, Texas-based airline will cut one route, but swap it with another. In July, the carrier will end service between New York-JFK and Worcester, Massachusetts, according to Cirium Diio schedule data. This route began in 2022 and currently operates once per day on an Embraer E175 aircraft.

This also includes retiring 21 aircraft earlier than expected, a move announced in March. Department of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy is considering changes to the retirement age for air traffic controllers (ATCs) as part of efforts to address staffing shortages. In a Wednesday interview with Fox Business, he noted the ongoing challenge of maintaining adequate staffing levels, Currently, controllers typically retire at age 56 or earlier under certain conditions. They can retire with a full pension at age 50 after 20 years of service or at any age after 25 years of service.
