The problem, first revealed by 5 INVESTIGATES, involves now-former Metro Transit Police Chief Earnest Morales. The state law says that when a public official resigns while under investigation, all the records related to it become public. But the Metropolitan Council has always maintained that Morales did not fit the definition of a “public official” under state law. In a state house committee hearing on Wednesday, lawmakers voiced no opposition for a bill that would fix the issue.

It happened so fast Jamie Krueger had no time to react. He was driving on Highway 23 near Marshall, Minnesota on an overcast day last June. A State Patrol trooper – who was just months into the job – was driving directly in front of him. Without any warning, lights or sirens, the trooper pulled a U-turn to try to stop a suspected speeding driver and immediately side-swiped Krueger on the highway.

The nation’s largest health insurance company based in the Twin Cities remains on high alert three months after the killing of its chief executive officer, Brian Thompson. Thompson was shot and killed in early December outside of a New York City hotel in what police described as a “brazen, targeted attack” on the 50-year-old from Minnesota.

The frustrating delays with Minnesota’s new cannabis industry have resulted in hundreds of would-be entrepreneurs getting out of the business before it even gets off the ground. New data obtained by 5 INVESTIGATES shows that more than 400 people requested refunds of their application fees from the state after it called off the pre-approval license lottery late last year. Those refunded fees totaled more than $1.5 million. Matt Whittaker planned to open a cannabis testing lab.
