    ANN ARBOR, MI — The University of Michigan has announced plans to renovate and repurpose two historic houses, making them part of its Central Campus in Ann Arbor. That includes a house at 308 E. Madison St. where World War II hero Raoul Wallenberg lived as a UM student in the 1930s and a house at 439 S. Division St. where famous playwright Arthur Miller lived as a UM student in the 1930s. UM’s board of regents is expected to approve the renovation project at its meeting Thursday, May 15.

    ANN ARBOR, MI — Cinetopia is back. The film festival that started in 2012 returns to the screens of the Michigan Theater and State Theatre in downtown Ann Arbor for a four-day run from Thursday through Sunday, May 15-18. Presented by Marquee Arts as “the best films from the world’s best festivals,” the lineup includes over two dozen films, including documentaries, narrative features and shorts.

    ANN ARBOR, MI — One day it’s there, and then one day it’s gone. The Ann Arbor Farmers Market office and restroom building is now reduced to rubble as of Monday, May 12. The city’s parks department, which oversees the market in Kerrytown, decided to demolish the 1984 brick structure after determining last year its foundation was compromised, making it unsafe for longterm use. Because it was less than 50 years old, it was not considered historically significant, officials said.

    ANN ARBOR, MI — Jaydan Lightfoot says being a young mother with a 3-year-old son comes with financial challenges, especially with the rising cost of living in Ann Arbor. “Yes, I live in Ann Arbor, but I’m struggling living in Ann Arbor,” she said. She was born and raised in the city, went to Ann Arbor public schools and is now attending Washtenaw Community College while working at a local pizza shop, but being able to afford staying in her increasingly pricey hometown isn’t easy.

    ANN ARBOR, MI — Ann Arborites, mark your calendars: Sonic Lunch is less than a month away. The popular summer concert series sponsored by Bank of Ann Arbor since 2008 returns for its 2025 season June 5 with a mix of national acts and local and Michigan favorites, including a return by members of the band Tally Hall. There will be 12 free shows from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursdays at Liberty Plaza from June through August. Each includes a headliner and an opener.
