The water deficit has become one of the greatest challenges facing humanity due to the massive freshwater demand, depletion of water resources during changing climate, and heavily polluted aquatic environment driven by the intensification of the global population (Boretti and Rosa, 2019). As projected by the UN World Water Development Report (WWDR2018), almost 6 billion people will face severe water scarcity by 2050 (UN-Water, 2018).
