Starting in the 2026-27 academic year, it will be mandatory for ninth- through 12th-grade students to pass the exam that is taken to become a U.S. citizen to graduate. High schoolers will be required to earn a score of at least 60% on the civics test to graduate, but retakes are unlimited. Artist Claire Sedovic started her work on an intricate and vibrant mural in March, meant to capture the mood of Des Moines on a wall in the city's downtown skywalk that normally sits empty. But she wasn't alone. Nearly 300 Iowans joined Sedovic in 15-minute shifts to participate in a paint-by-numbers mural that included Des Moines and Iowa icons like the Iowa Capitol, nods to RAGBRAI and the city's farmers market and Varsity Cinema's building front.
