SignificanceFerroicities like magnetism and polarity are fundamental physical properties of matter and vital for electronic devices. Here, a missed branch of ferroicities, coined as alterferroicity, is theoretically revealed and implemented in two-dimensional materials. Different from its sister multiferroicity which requires the coexistence of multiple ferroics, alterferroicity exhibits multiple but noncoexisting ferroic orders.
