For November, which is Native American Heritage Month, The Michigan Daily’s Academics beat chose to spotlight four classes centered around Native American studies. Bethany Hughes, assistant professor of Native American studies and member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, guides students through Indigenous history in the United States in NATIVEAM 217: Introduction to Native American Studies. The course explores topics including relationships among tribal nations and the University of Michigan’s with Indigenous groups. The three-credit humanities course typically enrolls about 35 students and is currently only offered during the fall semester.

Rackham student Bethany Emery, a member of the Student Caregiver Advisory Council, attends the University of Michigan while parenting her 3 and 1-year-old sons. Emery wrote in an email to The Michigan Daily that while the University has provided some support to her as a parent, she believes it can do more. “While I think the University provides a decent level of support for student parents and caregivers, there are areas that could be improved,” Emery wrote.

The University of Michigan Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia opened its exhibition “Threads of Tradition: The Art of Ukrainian Vyshyvanka,” Sept. 5. The exhibit features five different types of Ukrainian embroidery, or vyshyvanka, loaned from private collections and the Ukrainian American Archives and Museum in Hamtramck, a co-sponsor of the exhibit.

Applicants for fall 2025 and onward will have the option to select the Ross School of Business as a on the Common Application, the school’s admissions team announced over the summer. This differs from previous years, where first-year Business School applicants had to apply to another University of Michigan college or school and select the Business School through preferred admissions.

The University of Michigan College of Engineering appointed Professor Karen A. Thole as the first female Robert J. Vlasic Dean in the school’s 170-year history. According to a public announcement, the University Record wrote that Thole’s term will begin Aug. 1, 2024, and will be in effect until July 31, 2029, as part of a five-year appointment system authorized by University Provost Laurie McCauley, and following the transition of former Interim Dean Steven Ceccio.

About 90 students from Grand Rapids Community College, Henry Ford College and Schoolcraft College gathered in the LSA building Friday to kick off the Transfer Bridges campus visit. The event was one of multiple day-long explorations of various University of Michigan resources that transfer students could use while applying to and attending the University. Both students who have already been accepted to the University and those who were still considering applying attended the visit.

Race, Gender and Nation is a Women’s and Gender Studies class that analyzes how those three aspects of identity impact family, reproduction, war, colonialism, imperialism and activism. The course fulfills the social sciences distribution requirement as well as the race and ethnicity one. Prof. Seda Saluk is teaching the class for the winter 2024 term. In an interview with The Michigan Daily, Saluk said the course examines how national discourses are racialized, gendered and sexualized.

The University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities will host the “Take Your Time” art exhibition by Enrico Riley until March 1. The exhibit, which first opened Jan. 30, consists of nine abstract paintings that build on each other, and was funded by a grant from the Mellon Foundation as a part of the Institute for the Humanities’ High Stakes Art initiative.

The University of Michigan’s annual Salary Disclosure Report was released on Dec. 8, 2023. According to the report, faculty salaries increased by an average of 3.7% and staff salaries increased by 3.1% at the Ann Arbor campus in 2023. Merit increases averaged 4% for executive officers and 4.3% for deans. Student tuition and fees make up 75.2% of the, state funding makes up 12.9% and costs recovered from sponsored research activities makes up 11.6%.
