    17 participants gathered at the University of Michigan Kinesiology building Tuesday evening for an Empowerment Self-Defense workshop. Chinese American artist Jarod Lew’s first solo exhibition is composed of three series of photographs and a multimedia installation. The exhibit opens with Lew’s photo series “Please Take Off Your Shoes,” which includes portraits of second-generation Asian Americans in their parents’ homes.

    More than 50 University of Michigan students gathered at the Michigan Union Thursday evening to attend “Culture in the Courtyard: Black History Month.” The Center for Campus Involvement and the Public Health Students of African Descent hosted the event, which featured a teach-in covering the history of the Black Action Movements at the University of Michigan, various activities for community building and a free dinner.

    After 50 years of business, Ann Arbor art gallery and store 16 Hands will permanently close its doors April 19th, 2025. Founded in 1975, 16 Hands was originally founded as a collective of eight local artists working to create a space to exhibit their works in Ann Arbor. Jill Damon joined the cooperative in 1978, taking on the role of owner in 1988.
