CLARKSBURG, W.Va (WDTV) - On August 11, 1924, lawyer and politician John W. Davis came to Clarksburg to accept the Democratic presidential nomination. At the time, he was living and working in New York as an attorney. He ran against Calvin Coolidge, the Republican candidate. Even though he didn’t win, he’s still the only person from West Virginia to be the nominee for a major political party. To honor him and his accomplishments, a centennial commemoration program was held Sunday at the Waldomore.

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va (WDTV) - 15-year-old Gail Carillo and her friends put together a multi-family yard sale Saturday as part of Bridgeport’s annual city-wide yard sale. The three girls chose to donate to the Red Cross because they all want to go into the medical field. Carillo said that the project went smoothly because all three girls had to work together.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va (WDTV) - The Morgantown Church of Christ is asking the Morgantown City Council if volunteers can build shelters for people experiencing homelessness in the area. Brandon Brammer, a youth minister at the church, proposed the idea at the city council meeting on Tuesday. The goal of the project is to build low-barrier, non-congregate shelters that are free-standing instead of inside a building.

BUCKHANNON, W.Va (WDTV) - The Lewis-Upshur Animal Control Facility in Buckhannon is holding an emergency adoption event Sunday. There’s an overflow of cats and dogs at the facility because there’s a high number of surrenders and seizures in Lewis and Upshur counties. One of the most recent seizures brought in 67 animals, but the facility only has 16 dog kennels and one cat room, so they’re in dire need of adoptions.

ELKINS, W.Va (WDTV) - A Randolph County man has been arrested for reporting a false emergency to the Randolph County emergency officials. According to a court document posted on the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page, a call came in to the Randolph County 911 center just before 12:30 p.m. Thursday regarding acts of terrorism at the Elkins Walmart. Court documents say that Stephen Mason called 911 to report someone committed ”obscene mutilation acts on children” in the Walmart bathroom.
