KARACHI: A woman died after being hit by a falling tree as strong winds blowing at the speed of up to 85 kilometres per hour on Friday uprooted over a dozen trees, knocked down some five electricity and telecommunication poles and damaged around six vehicles in what was described as a “rare” weather phenomenon of a deep depression in the Arabian Sea turning into a cyclone during the monsoon season.

LAHORE: A boy and his young sister died on Friday and two other members of the family were critically injured when the roof of their dilapidated house collapsed during the torrential rain at Chak 531-GB in Samundri tehsil of Toba Tek Singh district. As per Rescue 1122 officials, the roof collapse resulted in the death of 13-year-old Imran Manzoor and his 17-year-old sister Sawera Bibi, while Tasawar Bibi (15 ) and their mother Zulaikha Bibi (46), were critically injured.

TAXILA: A couple were found dead in their house in Dhoke Ararzi in the Pindigheb police station limits in the early hours of Friday, police and hospital sources said. The couple, who were in their 50s, were sleeping in their house when unknown assailants scaled the wall and stabbed them to death. On Friday, when their relatives came to their house to see them, they found the couple in a pool of blood.

As Cyclone Asna on Saturday steered away from Pakistan’s coastline — lying about 200 kilometres away from Karachi — residents still braced for expected heavy rains brought by the weather system. A deep depression (a very strong low-pressure area), which the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) warned on Thursday would bring widespread rainfall, intensified into Cyclone Asna on Friday.

ISLAMABAD: A parliamentary committee on Friday raised concerns about the quality of drugs produced in Pakistan, noting that they often did not meet international standards. The concern was raised during the Senate Standing Committee on National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination meeting, presided over by Senator Amir Waliuddin Chishti at the Parliament House. The meeting reviewed the performance of the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (Drap) over the past five years.

GUJAR KHAN: Half a dozen villages of the Sohawa tehsil were inundated as the barrage of Bhaati Dam gave way to spilling water during heavy rains in the area. According to Engineer Saeed Ahmed District Emergency Officer (DEO), the sudden surge of flood waters spread to the low-lying villages. The Rescue 1122 personnel and divers, already on high alert, spread throughout the affected areas and initiated the rescue operation.

A Rescue 1122 team reached the Shamoni Khattak area upon receiving information about the incident. The deceased girl, identified as Asima Bibi, was said to be swept away by flash floods. The dead body was handed over to heirs for burial.

Bangladesh won the toss and sent Pakistan in to bat in the second Test on Saturday after the first day’s washout on Friday due to rain in Rawalpindi. Pakistan have only four days to square the two-match series after they lost the first Test, also in Rawalpindi, by 10 wickets. Bangladesh, whose win was their first in 14 Tests against Pakistan, brought in fast bowler Taskin Ahmed for unfit Shoriful Islam.
