On Thursday, March 30, Claremont Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) relaunched their academic boycott campaign to suspend Pitzer College’s direct enrollment study abroad program with the University of Haifa in Israel. SJP held the relaunch at Pitzer’s Grove House, where over 40 students and community members gathered to listen to a presentation held by club organizers.

On Feb. 23, Dr. Marcia McNutt was announced as Keck Graduate Institute (KGI)’s 2023 commencement speaker. McNutt is the President of the National Academy of Sciences, a non-profit organization dedicated to “providing independent, objective advice to the nation” via science and technology, according to their . She also received the prestigious Maurice Ewing Medal in 2007 for her contributions to deep-sea exploration.

On Tuesday, Feb. 14, the Claremont International Relations Society hosted an event titled “Hot Topic: Turkey-Syria Earthquake & Relief Efforts” led by Heather Fergusson, a professor of History at Claremont McKenna College. This event was inspired by two emails from Claremont McKenna College Dean of Students Diana Graves that provided students with resources to support the growing humanitarian crisis in Syria and Turkey.

On Monday, Feb. 6, two massive earthquakes with magnitudes of 7.8 and 7.6 devastated southeastern Turkey and northwestern Syria. Riddled by war and lacking infrastructure, the affected region — which had not seen any major earthquakes in over 200 years — was far from prepared to handle a disaster of this level. The Turkish government’s slow response and the extreme rain and cold weather plaguing the area only seemed to worsen the situation.
